GOAT BRED TO CLOT BLOOD - February, 1998

Shanghai - Scientists at a Shanghai research centre have bred the country's first transgenic goat, whose milk could be used to treat haemophilia, the official Xinhua news agency has reported.

The milk carries the IX factor, or plasma thromboplastin component (PTC), used to treat the inherited disease, which robs the blood of sufferers of the comp- nent that forms clots.

The Shanghai Shanghai Research Institute of Genetics had bred four other goats that would soon be able to produce milk with the IX factor, said Tang Jiazlien, a geneticist at the institute.
